How Many Diapers to Stockpile when you or someone you know is expecting
It’s a question constantly asked, and here I am to offer some help. Although each persons child is different I’m going to go by some basic math and guidelines.
If you’re having a child or know someone who is, take it from me. Start buying the day you find out. Not only will this save you time it will save you TONS and I mean TONS of money.
When I say stockpile, I mean enough stock of diapers for the firstyear of your childs life. You can continue as the baby arrives but it’s best to start early. At the end I will tell you an average price per diaper you should want to pay!
Newborn Diapers
Newborn Diapers are so cute and tiny, but are obsolete after a mere few days or a week or two. DON’T GO CRAZY. It will be such a waste of money if you buy more than 4-5 packs. Even then you might not need all of them, Yes newborn diapers are more per pack per $, BUT a newborn grows so fast in the first few days and weeks after coming home from a hospital. My daughters didnt make it through 2 packs before I had to switch to size one. As stated every child is different and you may NEED all 5 packs.
Size One
Again like newborn diapers, your baby is growing FAST. But not so fast that this size will only last a week. Remember Size 1 diapers go up to 12 pounds, so you have some time!
I would suggest 20 packs of Size 1 Diapers. (I like to figure in ripped ones, pre-peed on before your’re done changing, and surprise poops).
Size Two
Size Two goes up to about 16 pounds, and remember as the diaper sizes go up you get LESS diapers. Again I would suggest about 20 packs of size two as your baby is hitting milestones and having growth spurts.
Size 3
I swear the world stops, and you feel like your child hasn’t grown because they will be in size 3 for whon knows how long. I swear both my girls were in a 3 for a year or more. To be safe I’d reccomend 50 packs if not more depending on your childs weight. Size 3 goes up to 28 pounds, a HUGE jump in weight requirements.
Size 4 & 5 are potty training sizes, these really depend on your child and ability to use the potty & or size. I never made it past size four! So they are really at an as needed basis.
Pull Ups
I would stock these as well for mid-potty traning, car rides etc. I had a stockpile for 50 packs and gave away my last 10 to a friend. BUT I didn’t spend more than $2 a back (Regular $9.99)
And that brings me to prices.
HTSFF rule of thumb is that a good price PER DIAPER (not pack) to not overwhelm myself is $0.10 per diaper. You can OBVIOUSLY get less money per diaper depending on what store you shop at and what coupons you have, but my room of thumb is I will not stockpile if the price per diaper is over $0.10. It’s not a deal for me. Although if I am in a bind and ABSOLUTELY needed diapers I would resort to no more than $0.20 per diaper. Lot’s of times we find diaper deals on www.howtoshopforfree.net for less than $0.10 per . Keep your eyes out, look for deals and compare. It is possible to cut your 1st year of diaper expense in HALF. Look for diaper coupons, ask friends and family for theirs they aren’t using. Look for weekly sales on diapers etc.
It can be done and you can focus more time on baby, than having to make that last minute trip to the store because you used your last diaper.
