First glances of my “stuff” (or “stockpile” as we couponers like to lovingly call it), are usually met with a gasp, then rolled eyes, then a “WHY?”
How to explain the mountain of cleaning supplies, disinfecting wipes, hand soap, water, coffee, tissues, TP and PT (Toilet Paper and Paper Towels for the Newbies), etc. or a basement or spare room or closet full of soup, pasta, sauces, PB & J, Spam (I love Spam!), oral care, hair and body shampoos, soaps and lotions, and every OTC medicine and remedy, whether I use them or not.
Well, you’ll usually get my canned response about being prepared for a power outage, a blizzard, a tsunami (in Seabrook?), Zombies or Martial Law. But let me tell you about just getting the common cold. Yep. The cold- weepy eyes, sneezing, coughing, aching, just shoot me kind of cold.
It hit on Thursday. A little runny nose- hmm, maybe it’s allergies? Alas, no…it’s a raging full blown cold. I am quarantined- I couldn’t bear to have my DH and 85 year old mom get sick, too…so I’m on my own. And you know what! I have everything I need. Puffs, food, Lysol wipes (everything I touch gets wiped). Here it is Sunday, I’m feeling a little better, but I haven’t had to go out/send out for anything except cold medicine. And herein lies the lesson.
Yes, the one thing that I ran out of, and had to send my DH out for, was cold medicine. How did this happen, you ask?
Well, I had ONE opened box of Dayquil left. ONE. 16 pills, or 2 days worth. It was on my list of things to restock, but if you know me, you know that it must be on sale, with a coupon, and some sort of rebate (ECB, SavingStar, Ibotta, Mobisave, etc…all of them would be awesome! It is on sale! Today. At CVS!
Qlearquil is on sale for $7.99 each (from $10.49). Spend $30, get $10 ECB! Limit 1
I’ll buy 4, use (4) $2/1 Qlearquil, spend $30, get $10 ECB back (limit 1).
And, look, there’s a coupon today for Puffs Product FREE wyb (2) Vicks Products – 1-24-16 PG
So, $31.96 for 4 boxes, -$8 coupons = $23.96. And I’ll get back a $10 ECB, and 2 free Puffs Plus. Effectively, $3.49/box and 2 free Puffs!
And I could do it again. Of course there’ll be no second ECB, but my final cost for 8 boxes of Qlearquil and 4 Puffs will be $37.92. MUCH better than the $21.48 one would pay if he ran out to the store to pick up one box of each- Dayquil/Nyquil. (Lesson- try not to be product specific.)
So, is 8 boxes enough? Hmm, with an expiration date of 5/2018, it should be. Or at least until the perfect storm of sale/coupon/ECB or IS (Instant Savings)/rebate hits again.
