I take it he works for the electric company. If it is the same ice storm I 'm thinking of we went 3 weeks without power and got it back just before Christmas. Thank goodness for generators! We were the last of the 40 people without power to get it back in our state. When they arrived on our dead end road I was able to bring them hot coffee and muffins because of my generator. They were very appreciative because it was freezing out! Part of the crew that were restoring my power weren't going to be able to go home for Christmas because they were from another state and were headed to another state fom my area to restore the power there.

That was the ice storm, it was crazy. 3 weeks is rough and must have been expense for fuel!!!
He is a Firefighter/Paramedic so once something like that happens he gets on shift and stays and doesn't get released whenever there is a 'state of emergercy'. We were living on the NH/Mass border then now we are a lot closer to you! :) We are on a long hilly private road with a 500ft driveway. So we have our generator from our old house and are a good 20-25 min from the main road. We thankfully at the old house only went for 11 days without power but I stayed with my daughter at my inlaws who were onlywithout for 36hrs. My daughter was barely 3 months old at the time. We actually gave our generator to another family during the storm who had children who needed to stay in their home for medical reasons so it worked out for the best I guess.

We actually have an on demand propane generator because we looe our power so often and for such a long period of time. 12 seconds after your power goes out your house swaps over to propane. It was expensive to run but much cheaper than staying in a hotel for all that time. We have a gas generator too which my son used because he was without power for about a week. Just this week we lost our power for almost a full day with the storm that came through.

We have only lived here since the end of Dec. So far we have had the power go out twice so far and not for more than a couple of hours. That stinks you lost power again with that storm. The weather this year is so crazy!!! We really want to do an on demand system of so kind mostly for when we lose power and we aren't here. Roughly how much propane does it go through? Our house is heated by an outdoor wood furnace with a radiant heat flooring system but the back up furnace is propane and so is the hot water so we already have that. We never use the back up heat system because it empties the 2 large propane tanks in less than a week. With the house being only 4 years old and very energy efficient I would have thought the propane would last longer.

I don't have room in my apartment to stockpile or hoarde anything. I'm a single mother of three (the youngest being 6months) and I am laid off for the next few months…talk about fixed income! I never couponed until I saw Kathy's book while trolling through Amazon. I got it a couple of days ago, and am currently reading it. I tried my hand at couponing at CVS yesterday for the first time. I paid $15 for a $40 bill…that was quite a difference! I turned to couponing out of necessity, not a desire to hoarde. I cincerely hope that stores and manufacturers don't make it more difficult to provide for my family!

I found out about Kathy by seeing on TV and then when her book came out I bought it for me and also a copy for my daughter who lives in Texas (she is really struggling to get by right now). I have been able to cut our grocery lists most weeks by 60% and I am hoping to top that. I stockpile certain things that I know we need to have on hand and I have a chest freezer which is the single best purchase I have ever made. I don't hoarde food (bugs anyone?) and I refuse to buy something that is free that will not be used unless it is something I can donate or send to my DD to help her out. I have never shelf cleared in my life and you won't find me tying up a line at the grocery store for hours to ring my 27 orders. I am disabled, have a really tight budget and only wish that I had found out about this 5 years earlier when my kids were at home and I was out of work. We were so poor back then that we had to rely on the food bank so now I make it a point to shop for them every month too.
I have watched this show but I find it nauseating seeing the stockpiles, hoarding and greed. I have also wondered sometimes where they are finding the exact coupons they need for every item and also how they are able to use so many of them at one time. One woman on the show I think absolutely did something illegal. I did appreciate some of the people were really trying their hardest to save money and take care of their families and I respect them.
Kathy and the people on this forum have helped me so much and I truly appreciate finding this board. Couponing has improved not only my life but my daughter's and my friends who I have helped get started.
