3 “Damn” Cents For Gas
One of my earliest childhood memories has to do with the price of gasoline. I remember being a little girl and driving through Chelsea with my family, as we drove past the gas station my father yelled “I can’t believe the damn price of gas has gone up 3 damn cents!” He sounded very upset. My sisters sat nervously. My dad was a very religious man and never really used any type of cuss words. He was also a very large and stern man, so when he yelled we all held our breath and listened. But I could tell he was very concerned about the 3 cents and this was going to be a financial problem for him. I wanted to help ease his burden. I quickly reached into my little purse and pulled out my pennies. I reached across to the front seat and handed my pennies to him and said; “Here you go daddy. I can pay for the gas, you can have my 3 damn cents!” My sisters gasped, not sure what my father would do because back then little girls didn’t use cuss words without getting soap in their mouths. I realized what I said and could tell by my sisters faces I was most likely in big trouble. My heart raced and time stood still while we waited to see what my dad would say next. All of a sudden my father burst into laughter. We all exhaled and slowly the car filled with laughter. Everyone but me that is, I was still not sure what they thought was so funny. My mother quickly chimed in and explained the gas cost was not three cents per gallon nor could you ever get gas for 3 cents. My sisters chuckled at my expense. I remember being made to feel foolish by my older sisters for thinking that gas was only 3 cents, but how would I know I was just a little kid.
Fast forward almost forty years and I am now getting gas for 3 cents a gallon thanks to Stop & Shop Gas Points Program. Unfortunately my dad is no longer with us but if he was I would love to take him to the gas station (my treat) and show him that you really can get gas for 3 damn cents! As for my sisters, well to this day they still don’t pay enough attention to what their little sister says. They are most likely paying 2.00 a gallon for gas and they probably think they are getting a good deal! I however just got 35 gallons of gas for $1.35. That’s just 3 “damn” cents a gallon. Who’s the foolish one now girls!
