6 Things You MUST Know Before Shopping at Dollar General
Dollar General is one of the best stores to shop in if you are looking for value!
We’ve got some DG hacks that will make your shopping experience even better
DG App
The Dollar General App allows you to check prices and find matching coupons. You don’t even need to be in the store to do it! Simply scan the barcode or manually enter the UPC and you can find out the cost (awesome for Penny or Clearance Shopping) and whether or not there are any matching digital coupons available for that item. The App enables you to scan products as you shop to see prices (INCLUDING PENNIES!), find deals and discounts, and track your total so you can stay within your budget.

“DG CUSTOMER” Wifi
This is a Dollar General best kept secret. Most Dollar General’s don’t have very good cell service so you may have thought the DG App was a no go for you. Just before heading into your Dollar General go to the wifi settings on your phone and search available networks. You should see an option for DG CUSTOMER. Connect to the DG CUSTOMER wifi and you will be all set to access the DG App. This is another game changer for Penny Shoppers!
Early Activation
All Dollar General Stores Start their Sunday ad on Saturday at 7pm. What this means is that you get BOTH the current sale and the next week’s sale from 7pm until closing on Saturday. If an item is on sale both weeks you should get the better of the two sale prices.
There are a bunch of benefits to being able to shop during early activation but our favorite is that you can use the $5 off $25 Purchase Coupon available most Saturdays. This means that you don’t have to wait until the last day of the new sale and risk items being out of stock!
You can also mix and match sale items from the current sale and sale items from the next week’s sale.
Make sure that you’ve made your list (use our early ad scans) before you go in the store because the store may not have the new sale tags up.

Stock/Price Checker
Have you ever wondered how much an item is or if your local store has it in stock? Prices can vary by region so your local store may have slightly different shelf prices than our local stores. If you shop at Dollar General there is a way to check your local store for pricing and in stock status!
- Once you have signed in and set your store location you would go to the shop section and select shop online (selecting shop online is only necessary if you are on the app…if you are on the website you can jump to the next step)
- Use the search bar to find the item you’re looking for.
- Now click find in store.
- This will let you know if the item is in stock in your store. Keep in mind that these are estimates and may not always be 100% accurate.

Stacking your $5 off $25 Purchase Coupon and $5 off $20 (or $5 off $30) Gain Coupon
Yes! You can stack these coupons (even though they state they do not stack!). The key to making this work is using the DG App to make sure that your Gain items are attaching to the Gain Purchase Coupon. This coupon is notorious for not attaching to random items so as long as you scan in store, you should be successful in making this “double dip” work for you!

Penny Shopping
If you are in and Dollar General Facebook groups you’ve probably seen people talking about “Penny Shopping” and wondering if it’s really a thing. Yes it is.
Most weeks on Tuesdays the stores are told to pull select items from the sales floor to either return or throw away. When this happens, Dollar General marks the item down to a penny. If your store is doing a good job, they should be pulling them off the sales floor. There won’t be a sign saying “Penny Items”.
If you find a penny item you will want to take all that you find (or all you want) to the register because although the stores have been told to sell you what you bring up, they are instructed to check the sales floor right away to ensure that there are none left behind.
