Anyone that has followed How to Shop for Free over the years knows the name “Cardinal”. Cardinal has been a huge part of HTSFF for many many years and always there to help every newbie with with patience and respect. Right now Cardinal really needs our help…
Many of you have asked , where has Bird been? You are aware that she has two grandsons and assume she is busy with them, which for the most part is true. What we haven’t told you is that her grandson “Spencer” was diagnosed with a rare fatal disease. As you can imagine that has left her in a world that none of us wish to ever have to imagine living in.
I have put off writing this post for quite some time for two reasons. One, it is very painful for me to write this. Cardinal is one of my best friends that has stood by my side over the years, as I have with her. We have helped each other with many painful life experiences but this one, a fatal diagnose of her beautiful grandson rips out my heart and is extremely hard for me to even put into words.
Little Spencer was diagnosed with Sanfilippo. It’s a very rare genetic disease that takes the lives of young children much to soon. Currently there is no cure for Sanfillipo but they are working on things that can help prolong the disease.
If you know Cardinal you know that she is a very private person. I almost feel like I am betraying her by telling her story, even though she has asked for it to be shared. In all the years the Cardinal has been part of HTSFF she has never once allowed me to post her picture. You always recognize her by her Red Cardinal bird image. Most of you don’t even know her real name (Charlene Smith). She never would allow pictures of her grandchildren to be posted on the internet either.. until today.
Today Cardinal is asking for our help. As hard as it is for her,she knows every penny can count to help find a cure for this horrible and rare disease. We don’t know how long any of us has on this earth but knowing your grandson is fighting a horrible battle as well as other children is heart wrenching to say the least. They don’t know if a miracle will happen or if Spencer will be spared. All we can do is hope and pray that they find a cure and they find it fast.
Saturday February 25th they will be having a fundraiser/ dance in Biddeford Maine. All proceeds will go to the Cure Sanfilippo Foundation a nonprofit organization and will be used for research and clinical trials to help find a cure.
Please consider going and showing Bird your support or if you can make a small contribution every penny counts.
