It’s that time of year again!
Memorial Day weekend is the “official” time to start planting your garden. I have to admit that I never have the patience to wait that long and 80% of my veggies are already in the ground. But I am still on the hunt for more plants and as we all know I love to get things for free. One of the easiest ways to get free plants is to just ask your friends and family to gift you their leftovers. Every year my brother in law always has extra cucumber plants that he doesn’t want so I grab those for free. Craig’s List and Freecycle are two other great resources for scoring free plants. People always have left overs that they are willing to give away 100% free. My flower gardens are full of free plants that a generous freecycler gave me when thinning her garden. If you plant from seed Walmart is my favorite place to grab inexpensive/ free seeds. The American Seed Company seeds at Walmart are only $0.20 a pack. I always have overage thanks to Walmarts new coupon policy so that is how I got all my seeds for free.
Every year I like to try something new. This year I really wanted to try and plant artichokes but haven’t had any luck finding them in the local nurseries. I am hoping to find one on Freecyle if not I will have to try and order one or just steal some of my friends once they are grown! For now my newbie plant of the year is a cranberry bush. I have never tried this and am anxious to see how it does. The plant like wet soil and being in Boxford aka the home of the wetlands I am sure it should do well right next to my pond. If things go as planned I will be drinking free cranberry juice for life!
What’s my secret to a great organic garden? Rabbit Poop!
Rabbit poo is better than any fertilizer or slow release granular that you could ever buy and best of all it’s free! If you have a bunny, that is. Unlike the horse crap my husband brought home for my birthday one year. Yes, I said for my birthday. He actually gave me a truck load of crap for my birthday! Rabbit poop can go directly onto your garden without having to age and decompose. They are like little poop capsules that do not burn your fruit and veggies. I have literary watched grass grow before my eyes. It was like a crazy infomercial. Rabbit poop also look and smell 100 times better than cow or horse crap. Had my husband brought me home a bunny that year as an instant fertilizer poop machine he probably would have gotten a huge thank you instead of what he got or should I say didn’t get for bringing home a truck full of crap!
