I had the opportunity to work with USFamilyGuide to review these spices from Olde Westport Spice & Trading Co. shown above, which included a Garlic Shake, Mesquite Seasoning, as well as spice mixes to make Chicken Enchilada Soup, Chili and Chili Verde. These spice mixes come with the recipe on the back of their package (for those less-adept cooks, or those just learning!) which makes them very appealing! Here are my thoughts on the ones I’ve tried thus far..
I used the Garlic Shake many times since opening.. it smells AMAZING! I tried it on popcorn, homefries (seriously delicious) as well as frozen chicken patties (definitely helps JAZZ up a normally bland packaged food) but my favorite use for it was steaming chicken. If you’re looking for something to spice up those boring boneless/skinless chicken breasts if you’re staying healthy, this is the way to go! I just shook on the Garlic Shake, sliced some onions, scallions and fresh orange and wrapped it all up in a tightly wrapped foil packet.. NO OIL OR OTHER SEASONING NEEDED. The chicken cooked in all of it’s own juices, as well as the juice given off by the orange and was juicy, flavorful ALL the way though (which as most home cooks know can be hard to do without brining ahead of time) and sooo tender. I highly recommend this method and will be steaming my chicken breasts with this method (and spice) from now on!
I also tried out the Mesquite spice shaker.. also very good. I made a Mequite Pork meatloaf that I filled with roasted bell peppers, carrots, celery, onion and scallions. It definitely gives you a Tex-Mex feeling, an outdoor smokiness-quality to your food, almost like using liquid smoke, but not as overwhelming. It’s very good! I think next time I’ll try it on a meat when I use my George Foreman indoor grill. I imagine this would taste INSANE on an outdoor grill, fortifying the smokey flavor with the flavor of the grill.. I would definitely suggest that!
I had a chance to try the Chili spice mix packet tonight and it was AWESOME! I must admit, as a home cook I’ve been trying to make a good scratch chili spice blend and never found the perfect mix.. this one is it! Not spicy, just a little heat.. not overwhelming at all. It was very easy to make.. I followed the package instructions with a few exceptions.. the recipe called for ground turkey or chicken; I used a mix of turkey and ground beef, and added a few minced onions. We had it served over egg noodles with some cheese and scallions to top it off, and it was heaven! I really enjoyed it.. and hubby’s words, “YUMMY!” so it went over well 🙂
