March 12, 1929 was a sad day in history.
The City of Atlanta, Georgia lost its 41st Mayor. Candler’s more notable contributions to the United States and to his responsibility in helping to set up this How To Shop For Free web site is worthy of our discussing his life.
Wait… who was Asa Candler???
Candler bought the formula for a new product introduced back in 1988. You may have heard of it … Coca Cola? Asa was merely a drugstore clerk but that $550 purchase of the formula catapulted this man to be worth millions of dollars taking this soft drink to its current global presence. So you ask… what on earth does Coca Cola have to do with How To Shop For Free?
Candler marketed the Coca Cola beverage by offering a handwritten voucher that gave people a free sample glass of the product. Despite the long-held incorrect rumor that Coca Cola was addicting because it contained cocaine, the product took off by creating “buzz” in a far different way… that handwritten voucher would someday be called a “coupon.”
Candler was an aggressive marketer for Coca Cola. His handwritten vouchers eventually had to be printed because of the popularity. THAT is the reason that today, March 12th, we should all bow our heads for a moment of silent meditation and remember how our lives have changed through couponing as a result of Candler’s brainstorm so many years ago.
