I can’t be shy when I say I had a field day yesterday at Target. I’m a single mom of two, and have total care over my sister (26), I blog here, I recently just went back to work as Assistant Food Service Director, and my real job is at home taking care of these beautiful girls! Our new project for our house was to start an “arts and crafts center” we all enjoy it, and decided that Sundays are our new designated “arts and crafts day”. We usually go to Dollar Tree, but I’ve noticed they have pretty much the same things everyday, and we wanted a little bit of a change. So don’t mind the long post, I’m going to walk you through my finds (plus dinner for the night while we were there).
I am queen of “I’m not paying full-price for anything” usually because I just could never afford it, but now It has gotten me in the frame of mind that “YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FULL PRICE FOR ANYTHING” You may not need it now, but grab it when it’s cheap and you’ll save so much money. Even when it comes to arts and crafts!
THE DOLLAR SECTION
It can be found as soon as you walk in to any Target. Prices range from $1-$5 and sometimes you can find some awesome stuff!
We found these wooden cutouts (we also have 2 more with a Bunny and says “Happy Easter” not pictured). At $1 each with all three girls this is a perfect Sunday afternoon project for Easter. If you don’t celebrate Easter, they also had some neutral spring cut-outs (butterflies, flowers etc.)
For $4 I had an afternoon project! (We also have glitter glue and other stuff hanging around the house to add more to these)
I also came across hanging chalk boards and galaxy white markers (permanent) that wrote perfectly on the chalk board. I am actually heading out again today to grab a few more of these as this will be my own little project. As you can see above I scratched something really quickly together, testing out the marker, knowing that it works and stays on the possibilities are endless! I’m going to make customized boards for everyone’s rooms and decorate them, also spruce up a new one in honor of my parents. Both of these (the board and the marker) were only $1 each.
Arts and Crafts Section
Ever since I found $.17 Crayola crayons before Christmas this is my one place I ALWAYS scope out first. You wouldn’t think, but I can always guarantee a good portion of these 3 isles (arts and crafts, office supplies, filing) will either be on markdown or clearance! Even the Target Up&Up brand!
I love seeing that red and white sticker. To me it screams JACKPOT!. Note: If it’s not more than 50% off the original price. I WILL NOT buy it. (I know I’m nuts). These were originally priced at $3.49, they were marked down to $1.74. So yes I spent the $3.49 but only because I bought 2! These will last my kids a month or so, and can be used any Sunday we feel on anything, their number one thing is to steal all my computer paper that I print my coupons on.
Glue and Crayons
The arts and crafts essentials, and cheaper than DOLLAR TREE. Yes sometimes even paying $1 is full price to me and that’s a no no :)I came across these looking for my special little white and red stickers. The crayons were originally $1.19 on clearance for $.58. Again I grabbed 2 for the price of one! The glue was $1.79, marked down to $.88. Still cheaper then the Dollar Tree!
Now I have to be honest, if it was just me I would not have paid what I did for these, but my sister REALLY REALLY wanted them. I guess they are kind of funky right?? These were originally $6.76 but were marked down to $3.38. -The sacrifices I make for my girls! :p Just Kidding. We only got one package of those… LOL
I haven’t used these since I was a kid. I remember my mom used to buy us plain white canvas shoes, or plain white t-shirts and let my sister and myself go wild. So when I saw these priced at $5.99 but marker down to $2.48, the inner child in me got excited. 75% off and I get to go back to the 1990’s WITH my kids and sister. It was a must have, can’t wait for the Sunday we decide to do this!
How to Books
Did you know there were 75 things you can do with Scotch tape? I wouldn’t have either with the book priced at $5.99. LUCKILY for me it was marked down to $1.79, so now I’ll know what I can do besides horribly wrapping Christmas presents at 1am on Christmas eve, Because I thought that was the only time Scotch tape was used.
Melissa and Doug FacePaint!
I know you’re probably thinking, “Halloween is so far away” and that’s fine and dandy, but if your kids are like mine (strange) they love watching weird makeup tutorials on YouTube with face paint and get into your new Revlon makeup that you got for free at CVS a few weeks ago, its a steal for us! (please tell me I’m not the only mom whos’ kids do this) ANYWAY! These were priced at $9.99 and marked down to $4.98. To me that is a stock up price, I don’t trust the cheap ones at Wal-Mart or Target that are full price $3, I personally prefer a reputable brand when it comes to covering my kids faces with stuff, and Melissa and Doug is a wide known distributor of children’s products. So I did buy 2. One for my kids to pretend they are Hollywood effects makeup artists, and stashed one away for Halloween.
MY BIGGER PURCHASES
Yes I made some bigger purchases, but they were not in vain…or full price!
Picnic Basket Cutout Kit!
I instantly fell in love with this, as my kids are always asking for fake food for their dolls. I thought it would be fantastic if they actually “made the food themselves”. Originally $14.99 I grabbed this for $7.98, and found it definitely worth the investment, as I see the “fake food kits” in the toys section run about $20. This is a perfect Sunday afternoon project.
Crayola Light Designer!
I thought this was pretty awesome. What was even more awesome was the price at 50% off. Was $39.99 was marked down to $19.98 PLUS an instant $2.50 savings peelie on it. Bringing my price down to $17.48. My sister can’t wait to try this!
Rose-Art Roto-Motion Mixer
It just seemed cool, I like dinosaurs, my kids like dinosaurs…why not? Or as a last minute gift to a boy for his birthday. I’m sure I’ll find some use for it. This was my only impulse buy of the day, Only because of the price. It was $35.96 and I got it for $17.98. I don’t do many impulse buys, but I couldn’t pass it up.
Then we made our way and made a few other purchases not pictured.
I got 3 whole fryer chickens originally $5.98 with a markdown of $2.00 so each came out to $3.98 each (SCORE)
2 Black Out Panel Curtains for the kids and my sisters room (awesome color turquoise) Priced at $25.00 per panel. I got them for $12.98 a panel (I only bought 2, one for each window).
So as you can see you CAN have a shopping spree and NOT PAY FULL PRICE. You just need to know what to look for. I’m not made of money, but now that I have learned to shop differently not just at Target but every other store. I can have days like yesterday where I can just decided. “Let’s go fill up on arts and craft supplies and I don’t care if we spend $100, because I just got $200 worth of stuff that will last for MONTHS”.
You need this mentality when you shop! Happy shopping and run to your Target to see if you found the deals I did!
