Shaw’s Accepts Competitor Coupons
What’s going on behind the curtain?
This Friday Shaw’s started accepting competitors coupons once again with an added twist that they didn’t have once before. Basically Shaw’s is willing to take any stores coupon that sells the same products. This includes % off your entire purchase coupons, drug store coupons, even rumors of clothing and ECB’s being redeemed.
Have they gone to far?
Most veteran shoppers see what they believe is an error on Shaw’s part. At first glance all my red flags went up and I wanted to say “ Hey Shaw’s what are you nuts?” . They are just asking for coupon misuse that will come out of their pocket. How much will this cost them? Let’s all step back and take a big long look at this…. marketing campaign.
Two weeks ago Shaw’s wanted to stir up some hype about the new ad and asked all of us bloggers to hold out on the ad scans and wait till it was released and then cheerlead for them about a Coke promo. Unfortunately that was hard to do when the ad was in my opinion less than impressive. They wanted us to run into the store and see all the changes , lower prices and exceptionally friendly staff. Unfortunately for most of us we were not impressed with the ad itself so we lost the buzz. I myself went in and went out. I did not spend much time looking around or shopping.
Fast forward to this week. They have definitely created hype and coupon madness to say the least. They have crossed over for coupon friendly to coupon crazy. Accepting competitor coupons has got everyone talking online and in the store. There is cheering , even jumping for joy in the aisles (ok, maybe that was just me) .
Shaw’s has succeeded at accomplishing what they wanted to happen two weeks ago. People are IN the store. Bottom line they got us talking and shopping. Have they lost money by taking competitor coupons? Absolutely! But we are all in there looking for coupon match up and while we are there you can’t help but notice lower prices, really good prices! They got my attention when I saw the price of Iams $5.49 a bag. So before we say they are making a huge mistake with this coupon test run lets see what it is costing them. If cashiers are ringing coupon thru with the codes they are supposed to be Shaw’s will be able to see exactly how much this campaign is costing them. This is a marketing campaign to get us in the door and it has worked. Are they loosing money? Yes. It’s also a marketing tax write off. Compared to last years million dollar giveaway this one has me really excited. Shaw’s spends money on marketing campaigns all the time. Some work some don’t. Shaw’s gets that couponers are their biggest word of mouth free advertising source and they are using us as we fully welcome using them to save tons of money! Look at it this way. They could spend millions for a quick super bowl commercial or let couponers have a blast matching competitor coupons. In the end we are in the store filling the aisles and there is a sense of happiness in the air. To me this campaign is brilliant!
Thank You Shaw’s for bringing the love back to coupons!
